R.I.P. John Lennon. It is hard to believe he would have been 70.

I must say Mr. Knechel, you are getting some fancy in here. It was nice to have my friend, Google, at my finger tips.

Thanks for being there for us, Dave. without you, it would be like going home to find the house was gone. Nite nite, friend.

I thought you'd like that little feature, Snoopy, and it links right to a John Lennon search. You know how I feel about the Beatles.

Dave. I am rushing around today because our Thanksgiving is this weekend!!!!
Therefore I haven't had a chance to read your post on the Beatles yet. Can you please hook me up. You know my email address I believe. I'm totally in for that. I say no more. Weezie

It is hard to believe he would be 70. TIme goes way too fast. I have always loved the Beatles too. That is really nice that you can do those links like that for us. Thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving Snoopy, Weezie and all the Canadians that visit here!

Yes, it is hard to believe, but something tells me he'd still be as active and creative as he was throughout his brief life. I hope his murderer never gets paroled. Think about how much more beautiful music would have streamed through his mind and given to us in those 30 years.

Thankfully you did not link to the You Tube of Bed in Peace (or something like that) where Yoko Ono sings (I think its her) Imagine...lol!

I really like the Jealous Guy song. Yep, this world needs more of John Lennon type songs and singing. Unfortunately, there is no one who can do it like he did.

Happy Thanksgiving Day, my Canadian friends!

No bed-ins allowed, Sherry, and I have no desire to listen to Yoko's singing. I do feel a lot of compassion for her, though, because she is still deeply mourning her loss. The whole world lost plenty on the day his mind and voice were stilled forever.

Dave, I have missed you. Life has been so busy. As usual I love reading your posts. Sending best wishes of love to you and dear posters.

For several months now, I have been focused on sweet Kyron Horman. I pray for his return to loved ones.

Dave, best wishes to you, dear guy!

Dave, Nika1, Don't rub it in I am an old Bama girl at heart. I was there during the Bears time.Have since moved away, but still love it.

Hello, Kahluablue! I wondered where you were. I'm so happy to hear from you and I'm glad you're very busy these days.

I was just thinking about Kyron and if there's anything new. Several segments of COPS took place in Portland and that's what made me think of him. If there's anything you can enlighten us with, feel free.

Key, Kahluablue, best wishes to you, too. You're a real sweetheart. Thanks!

Thank you for that link, Twinsdad. From there, I found other stuff, like the Preview excerpt from LENNONYC | PBS. Did you know he purposely kept his D-string out of tune? D-flat. Interesting stuff. Thank you for the link.

Yes, we are living on borrowed time. What Mark David Chapman was to John Lennon, Elizabeth Muders-Stahl is to me.

Peace and love to you, too.

I didn't care for what I saw of John Lennon the man, but I loved his music. No one deserves to go the way he did either.

On a lighter note... had to laugh at your post about the SC/AL football game! lol. Back when I was first married we lived in SC.. he was from AL and I was from OH.. back in the ole Woody Hayes vs Bear Bryant days. Anyway now that I'm divorced and it sure did tickle me to see that upset and read that it puts OH in line for first.

Happy Thanksgiving to all you Canadians.

    October 10, 2010 | Registered Commenterconniefl

Ah, good old Bear Bryant. What a legend in college football. I watched both games yesterday, AL v. SC and LSU v. FL. That Gator game saddened me, but it is what it is, a bunch of very young men and Florida has a very young team this year. They will find their way.

A lot of people had issues with Lennon politically and I didn't always agree with him, but there's nothing wrong with giving peace a chance. No, he went way before his time and he didn't deserve it. No one deserves to be murdered.

    Thank you, Connie.

BTW Dave, I remember going down to Chicago's Lincoln Park and crying, crying, crying. How I loved John Lennon. What a tremendous loss! So understated! Fortunately, I trust that his legacy, works, love, and music will live on for many years to come. :). Love to you!

    October 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKahluablue

Oh, there's nothing to fear. John Lennon's music will last forever, just as the Masters do, like Beethoven. Lennon is just as much of a Master.

Aw, shucks, Kahluablue, much love to you, too.

Good evening Dave and everyone. I hope y'all have had a great w/e. We went to the Mississippi and into WI to see the leaves, not much for color but we had a great time with the family.

I loved the Beatles although I do have a very embarrassing story about hem. It was January 1964 Mike and I were married and living in San Antonio, where I am from. My cousin came over to see me and rushed in and asked me if I had the radio on. I said no, and she said turn it on The Beatles are on. My reply, Who are the Beatles? Yes, this person that did come to love the Beatles did not know who they were way back when. It does not seem possible that John would have been 70 but then it odes not seem possible that so many years have gone by since the Beatles were the hugest thing ever. I often wonder if they were even bigger than Elvis. I think they probably were.

Great videos Dave, thank you for bringing back the memories of an amazing artist.

Hi, Y'All! How I remember that evening so well- in Boston, in my ratty alley basement studio on Beacon, listening to the mighty Oedipus, World's Greatest DJ (well, in Boston, anyway)- he comes on saying something like, "Well, this is strange, but it seems someone shot John Lennon and he's in the hospital now". He started playing Beatles/Lennon songs that seemed appropriate. Honestly, I never thought for a second the guy would up and die on us- I just thought, Well, more Lennonesque lunacy, it figures some stalker would go for him, he'll pull through, blah blah. Just more interesting drama, more material for the music later. Along comes Oedipus, in tears. Oh My God. DEAD??!! I called up almost everyone I knew that night, unencumbered by small children, and just raged with them. Stupid guns! Stupid wackos! How could this happen in NYC, for pity's sake? I was somewhat reassured to hear that MDC (I still can't type out his hated name) traveled to the City, wasn't a product of it, and a very peculiar critter at that. And Mick Jagger always thought he'd be the one with the target on his back...

Hi, Peggy - It does sound like you had a very nice weekend. Good for you.

I have been a Beatles fan since they first came here in 1964, so like you, I have very fond memories. Do you know that Ringo turned 70 a month or so ago? And poor George Harrison, the baby in the band, has been gone since 2001. As for Elvis, I don't want to stir the pot with anyone who might be died-in-the-wool fans of his, but there's no comparison in the truest sense. Elvis performed music written by others. The music the Beatles played was their own, except for a few covers.

Hey! Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos.

    October 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDave Knechel

Hi, Karen - It was a very sad day, and I mourned for a long, long time. I'm still not over the loss of him and George. George was such a passive person, and so spiritual. Well, we have lots of memories, and plenty of songs that will always be with us. I will be very angry the day MDC is let out. He needs to come out in a box. He took a lot of music away from the world.

I don't believe I've shared this with you and it would seem like an appropriate time right now, so

My husband, Ken, is from Liverpool. Can you guess the rest? Of course! John Lennon and Ken were schoolmates at Quarry Bank back in the 1950's. Ken tells me that John was a bit of a "prat", at least I think that's what he called him. I may be mistaken, but I think that's a British word that describes a person who's a cross between a horse of a different color and a horse's ass, all rolled into one! I do believe he was also somewhat a trouble-maker and the name may include that implication.

Apparently the problem John ran into at Quarry Bank is that he was simply too artistic for the headmaster to abide, let alone comprehend. He was very avant garde, surreal, and simply couldn't fit in with the other schoolboys as he had no interest in academic subjects. Ken says he spent all him time drawing pictures, mainly doodle-like characters all over his school papers and books. Eventually he was directed to another school that specialized in fine art, rather like a magnet school here. The implication was that he either accepted the transfer or would be expelled from the school system.

Ken did say that John was well liked by the other lads. He apparently had a quick wit and was fun to be around. As his interest in music evolved, his popularity increased. John and early members of his skiffle group played for free or for a few bob at school dances and local parties.
Those occasions helped spread his popularity.

Ken and I lived in England for a period of time and he took me to visit the Liverpool he knew as a boy. We walked the streets of Ken's old neighborhood which was also John's neighborhood. We went to Penny Lane and Auntie Mimi's house, which had just been sold to Yoko Ono and was later made into a museum. We spent enjoyable times at The Cavern Club and it was easy to imagine The Beatles and other groups playing on the tiny stage. Those are all nice memories for us.

Somewhere in our basement we have some reel to reel tapes of the early Beatles. I can't recall if they were made just prior to or just upon their return from Germany. The problem is we don't have a reel to reel player, so they are simply gathering dust at the moment. I don't know what songs are on them. It would be interesting to find out.

    October 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCOL

COL, this is a remarkable story! Immediately, I want to focus on those reel-to-reel tapes. Do you have any idea how much they could be worth? You could be sitting on a goldmine, especially if they are original tapes that have never been heard before. That's incredible! Guard them with your life!

WOW! Thank you for sharing this very important piece of history with us.John Lennon and the Beatles will forever be a part of me.

RIP John Lennon. This was a nice tribute Dave.

BTW, finally you'd moved on from wordpress.com! Congrats, the blog looks great!

Good morning, Kiran - Yes, I made the leap from WordPress. Thank you. Right now, I'm writing a new post about the Anthony case, so I will be behind the scenes most of the day.

    October 11, 2010 | Registered CommenterDave Knechel

COL- I completely agree with Dave. Your not having reel-to-reel equipment or expertise is not an issue, really. Someone is out there right now with all that and what material you possess must be conserved. I strongly would suggest you do a little on-line investigating and discreet inquiring but do keep them locked up right away! Even horrendous quality early Beatles/Silver Beatles/Quarrymen recordings have HUGE monetary value, what sounds crummy to us can all be improved upon and utilized in some fashion in a recording studio quite easily by professionals. There are specialty auction houses if you want to keep your own direct involvement to a minimum, Sony/ATV holds rights to the old Michael Jackson owned portion of the song catalog but Barclays is a major creditor- however, EMI, NA (right in NJ) and Apple Corp. (yup, Apple the Beatles founded) OWN THE RELEASED RECORDINGS (why we can't get them legally on IPhone yet)- I cannot imagine they would not be interested in a fresh batch on unknown recordings! I am not kidding, Col, you could be sitting on a far nicer nest egg that your average pension plan!

Neat anecdotes, too, about John's early creative output. It's a good thing he glommed on to early rock and skiffle music so quickly and channeled his talents there for our sake, if not his. Good luck with it, but let me tell you I've been to Beatles Cons. to find that even stupid old souvenir magazine I collected as a kid have gone up, up, up in value, even though mass produced at the time. What you've got is really something...that stuff needs to get available to Beatles fans, if nothing else!

    October 11, 2010 | Registered CommenterKaren C.

Oh, and COL, that should be "Apple Corps." plural. Don't even ask- lol!
