Dave, thank you very much for putting this up. It means a lot to me. My family will appreciate this also. Joe's brother is being tested right now to see if he can be a donor since they have the same blood type and if so they will schedule surgery ASAP. If not, then the rest of my family members will be tested. Hopefully one of us from my rather large family can be a donor. Again, thank you so very, very much for doing this. If any of your readers are from the Minneapolis area, we will be having a benefit for Joe on October 30th, noon-4 in Maple Grove. If you are interested in attending please contact Dave and he can pass on the information to you. It is a spaghetti dinner and silent auction. The cost is $10. Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to donate to help my nephew. It is very much appreciated.

I don't know a lot about this disease, but I will tell you what I do know for any of you that are interested.

IgA nephropathy is a kidney disorder that occurs when IgA-a protein that helps the body fight infections-settles in the kidneys. After many years, the IgA deposits may cause the kidneys to leak blood and sometimes protein in the urine.

Many people with IgA nephropathy leak blood in the urine. Others leak both blood and protein in the urine. If too much protein leaks into the urine, the hands and feet can swell. About 25 percent of adults with IgA nephropathy develop total kidney failure. Symptoms of kidney failure include swelling in the hands and feet, nausea, fatigue, headaches, and sleep problems. By the time these symptoms occur, total kidney failure is near. That's where Joe is now. Total kidney failure means the kidney damage is permanent. People with kidney failure need dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Mary Jo, This weighs heavily on your families heart. May God show you his presence in preparing for these coming surgeries and may they both recover to have a fulfilling and rewarding future. No doubt this kidney disease has had a most debilitating toll on Joe and all of you. Joe being twenty eight means his brother is also young. There must be a wonderfully wholesome bond between these two brothers. I believe prayer is necessary not only for those prayed for, also for those who are praying because for both it brings us closer and illustrates our meaningful love for God and His for us. Since none of us can change all circumstances in peoples lives, as a Christian it is our way of caring about the trials of others and in our participating, we all grow and benefit Spiritually.

Sagemom, I have also read that on this site that Faith can move mountains and it totally does. There are so many kind and generous people on this site and that is what helps to keep that Faith moving. Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers and hugs. I can't express how much it means.

New Puppy, both Joe and his brother Josh are young and they are very close. I can't think of anyone else who is more fitting to be a donor. This has been weighing very heavy on our hearts, especially his mother's. As each day goes by his condition deteriorates so I am happy that his surgery is in the near future. I know God will be wtaching over both of them during this time, as well as the rest of our family. I love and agree with what your last part of your comment....

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your prayers, thought and inspiring words for me and my family. It is something that I will always remember. This site has so many wonderful, thoughtful and generous people and I am honored to be a part of this blog.

I want to let all of you know that the transplant surgery is done and both Joe and his brother Josh did well through it. They are now in the recovery room and will going up to their rooms in a couple of hours. They still need your prayers for a speedy recovery and especially for Joe that he doesn't have any problems with his body wanting to reject this new kidney. I can't thank all of you enough for all of your wonderful thoughts, prayers, etc. It means so much to me and my family. Thank you!

Mary Jo, There has been a very successful period of time that transplants have given long life to recipients. With todays even more modern medicines it is a very good possibility that there will be even more success for a high quality of life. Years ago A very good friend of mine had a kidney transplant from her sister. She was quite young when it was done and lived a very long and active lifestyle, I am asking in prayer for encouragement and special Blessings.

New Puppy, thanks for the encouraging words and prayers. I think it will help that he is young and that medicine has advanced as far as it has. I will keep everyone informed as to his progress. The benefit that we had for him was a huge success. There were so many caring people that showed up and who were so generous with their donations and the silent auction. He was truly humbled. Thanks again for your thoughts, prayers, etc.

20 minutes after receiving his new kidney, Joe was putting out a large amount of urine. He will be in the hospital for a few more days and then moving into an apartment 2 blocks from the hospital for a few weeks because he has to go to the hospital 4 times a week for different tests and to make sure his body is not rejecting the kidney. He was in a lot of pain last night, but he was up walking and moving around today. So far so good. Hopefully it will continue. His brother Josh who donated the kidney will be able to go home in about 2 days and was also in a lot of pain last night, but he was also up walking and moving around today.

Guess the pain was still under sedation the first hours after surgery. Hope those painful hours pass rapidly and all continues to be improving for both these young men.

I am happy to say that Josh (donated kidney) left the hospital on Thursday and is doing great. Joe left the hospital on Saturday and is living in an apartment that is affiliated with the hospital. He will have to live there for about 4 weeks since he will be traveling to the hospital 4 times a week to have tests and to make sure his body isn't rejecting the new kidney. He is doing well and looks forward to each new day that he has.
