    Where I've been

I need to answer some comments, but I’ve just been busy working on different things lately and I’m sorry.

One of those things deals with this blog. It’s built on the Squarespace 5 platform. There is now a version 6 and it’s a totally different beast. I’ve been experimenting with it. I’ve tried playing around with different templates and I can’t seem to duplicate this design, which I do like.

Take a look at it. I can match up all of the text colors, so that’s not a problem other than taking a lot of time. Speaking of which, I am paying for that one while maintaining this one. That’s why I’ve been pressing myself there. Getting nowhere, basically. I will, but please hang in with me. I’m headstrong and once I put my mind to something, I keep at it.

Pay particular attention to the comments. Although I haven’t adjusted the colors, look what happens when you hover your cursor over the name of the commenter. Three little circles appear on the right side. The far right one is to directly respond to that particular person, which will improve comments tremendously.

Anyway, the link is HERE. Please refrain from commenting there because it’s not an active blog yet; not in the sense that I want it to be. If I can’t match this one, I’ll scrap that one. If only I could bring the commenting format over here…

Thanks for being patient and concerned.

Change is hard for everyone, but it's a good thing sometimes. I looked at that page and really liked the "reply" icon to each poster. It's less confusing.

I'm not familiar with Squarespace but I have had a web page before that required constant updating and changing, etc. I am the world's worst with html or any kind of program writing script. You couldn't tell I've ever had a computer class when it comes to creating a web page. So what I did was all offline, then I'd upload the completed page and images at one time. I used to find a set up I liked then like I think I told you once before I used the "view source" and copied it all into notepad, then made changes in there that I wanted and uploaded it to the new site. Does Squarespace require you to use their format?

Everytime they come out with something new the way to post on the old site becomes more glitchy, so moving to the new format seems the best idea. Good luck. It's extremely time consuming until it's set up.

[Squarespace is a lot more controllable than free WordPress blogs. I can add advertising, for example. I prefer 5 over 6, but 6 had the comment reply advantage. It's also a completely different bird. 5 and 6 are built separately. I can import my old blog posts into the new one, but the learning curse is a horror story. Also, none of the templates allow for sidebars on both sides, which is a problem. While I was working on that site, I was also experimenting with assorted comment formats on this blog. The problem is, they won't reside on Squarespace and if there's a server failure with one of those comment companies, I may lose them. So far, I am a little discouraged by the whole thing, and I may just end up sticking with what I already have, since it's not broken, but clean it up a bit. It's getting way too busy.

Thanks for wishing me well with it. Maybe I'm over my head.]

Dave: I went over to take a look.

I think it looks very nice. The biggest difference I notice is that there is one vertical sidebar to the left, and then your blog post--with no vertical sidebar on the right.

On my internet page, I keep my favorites (as a vertical) sidebar (to my left) opened all the time--so, it makes your new blog appear a little too far to the right of my screen.

However, as soon as I closed my favorites bar; your blog appeared perfectly placed for easy, comfortable reading.

I was a while finding how to make the comments visible. lol

I like the feature that allows a response to a specific comment. It takes a bit of extra effort to get used to; but, it keeps the intergrity of the orginal commenter's thoughts and makes a response easier.

It lookes like we would be able to have avatars again! Would any smilies be possible? (And I hope you would be able to keep the feature that allows us to 'revise' our comment.)

All your hard work really shows!

[I did move the sidebar to the right, but now I don't think it's even showing up on the public end. I can see it, but I'm logged into the account.

If only I could incorporate the new into the old, I'd be very happy! Yes, avatars are included! I think you'll be able to revise comments, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Hard work? YES!!! I don't think it's close to showing yet, but thanks.]

Dave we all know you are always hard at work on something! I like the new format, its easier on my eye and I like the responding to a specific poster. But I am good with either one as long as you keep on blogging!

[I will continue to blog, Whistlersmother, so don't you worry about that! Once I get the hang of the new format, I'll write more. As a matter of fact, there's a conference I'm attending this weekend that I'm SURE to write about.]

Just checked your other page again. It's coming right along isn't it? Looking better each time I visit. You do good work.

[I don't know how "coming right along" it really is, but my brain is getting fried. I'd actually like to have more control over design, like I have on this one. Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately, it will bug me to death until I get it right.]

I like it also but what is the DO NOT CLICK HERE? I did not click it, but I wanted to. Maybe you should take that down because it is very tempting to click it. Also you mentioned a totally different Bird in a reply comment. Uh birds terrify me. Long story but it is all my sister's fault. Nothing will randomly fly by right?
Maybe you could put in a filing cabinet drawer to get to the stuff over here <--- in a safe place. That way it is easy to find- if you can't put them down both sides. Just trying to help, and quite honestly I have no clue about setting up a blog so maybe I will just sit over here and watch the construction at work.

['Do Not Click Here' has been on this blog for years, Michelle. It's near the top on the left sidebar. Whatever you do, DO NOT CLICK IT! It will make you laugh! Trust me, there are no birds in sight, either on this blog or the new one. You might as well make yourself at home here because it will be a while until I figure out the new one - if at all. I like having 2 sidebars.

Oh, I like that better, Dave. (Not that it matters what I like, lol.)

The sidebar is over on the right, now. I can see it; but, if I'm remembering correctly from earlier, there is not as much on it.

[I took the ads out for now, nan11, but I had planned on moving the sidebar to the right because it looks better, aesthetically. And, YES, it DOES matter what you like!]

I just found the do not click here on this one, I noticed it right off on the other one. Thank you for keeping this a no fly zone. Oh and I do feel at home, when we move I will be a little concerned since there is still things I have not noticed before.

    Hang in there Dave.
I feel your pain but I think it will all be worth it in the end. It looks good so far. And I'm really looking forward to those new features!
