Jeff Ashton to run for State Attorney?

The Orlando Sentinel and WESH are reporting that Jeff Ashton is poised to announce his run for state attorney. He will make his announcement on the steps of the Orange County Courthouse on Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM. WESH quoted Ashton and the Sentinel speculated.

Lawson Lamar is the present state attorney for the Ninth Circuit Court. He has enjoyed running unopposed in the past, so this should be interesting. Personally, I think Ashton would be a great choice. At present, he is taking care of his best-selling book responsibilities (Imperfect Justice) and, since the trial ended, working as a consultant for the Maitland, FL law firm of Troum & Wallsh.

Just after 6:00 pm today, this statement was made on his official Facebook page: “Please stay tuned we will be releasing more information on what next and how everyone can help, in the next few days. Till then have a happy new year.

Incidentally, Judge Stan Strickland left the bench today. We all wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

Wow, Jeff Ashton running for State Attorney is an interesting development. Aren't Casey's defense team trying to take action against him for alleged contempt? Would that affect his new endeavor?

I sure hope Judge Strickland enjoys his retirement. Happy New Year Dave and everyone.

That seems to be the consensus around these here parts, Tiffany. I guarantee I'll be one of the first to know come Tuesday morning. As for what the defense is trying to do? I don't think it will work. The trial is over. Their client won.

Something tells me I'll be seeing Stan Strickland soon, and if I do, I will let him know what you said. Happy New Year to you!

I'll be one of the people voting for Jeff Ashton should he decide to run for State Attorney, so count me in on his campaign...You can tell Judge Strickland that I wish him well also, as I'm sure all your readers do...Have a safe and sober New Year's eve...Don't forget to Buckle Up...

Thank you, Estee! Happy New Year to you, too. I will make sure Judge Strickland knows he is well loved in the world of blogging.

I live in a different circuit, so I won't be able to vote for Jeff, but I can help. That's what I'll talk to him about.

I think it is great that Jeff is running for State Attorney. I think he will be very good at it. I bet Lawson Lamar didn't see this coming.

I wish Judge Stickland the best in his retirement.

    Happy New Year everyone!

I think he has a good chance of winning, too, Mary Jo. I am fairly certain Lawson Lamar saw this coming. Ashton had sent out feelers to people in the State Attorney's Office, and he did mention it as a possibility. From the Orlando Sentinel:

As of Friday evening, the Florida Division of Elections website does not show any filing from Ashton reflecting his intent to seek public office.

But Orlando defense attorney Joerg Jaeger, a Lamar supporter, said Friday that Ashton has "had lunch meetings with people all over town" about running for State Attorney. "This is not a big secret."

Jaeger said Ashton first told him about his intentions to run in the months before the Anthony trial. At that time, according to Jaeger, the prosecutor expected the case to make him "a minor celebrity" with national name recognition.

If Ashton does run for state attorney of the 9th Judicial Circuit, he won't be Lamar's only challenger in 2012.

Ryan Williams, another former prosecutor in the 9th Judicial Circuit, is also running against his ex-boss.

Lamar has served as state attorney since 1989. Before taking that office, Lamar was Orange County sheriff.

Incidentally, Lamar is a registered Democrat, but I do believe this would be a non-partisan race.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I thought you'd like it, Snoopy!

Dave~~it also shows your excellence in graphic design. Yes, there is no question that I think it is classy. Thanks for putting it up and what a great way to start 2012.

Well, I think it's obvious now that I still enjoy doing design work. Thank you, Snoopy, it's always good to start the new year on a positive note, and this one should bring a chuckle or two.

Love your new banner Dave. If I lived in FL, Jeff Ashton would get my vote. Have a Happy and Healthy New Year, and thanks for all your wonderful posts in 2011.

    January 1, 2012 | Registered CommenterRob

Thanks, Rob. Some people are saying he isn't worthy because he lost the Anthony trial. To me, that's absurd. He was only 1/3 of the prosecution, and he had a very illustrious and winning career. I see no reason not to vote for him. Hey! Happy New Year to you, too, and I'm very glad you enjoyed my posts.

Monsieur Knechel, is that not a handsome BURBERRY scarf you are donning in the new banner, Non?

    January 1, 2012 | Registered CommenterKaren C.

Oh, and please understand, my son and I just got through a whole big history chapter on Napoleonic invasions and such (what a troublemaker! Napoleon, I mean- well, OK, my son too...) and having visited both countries and known many persons of both nationalities, well, they are still THISCLOSE to throwing things at each other in the UN! So the sight of a Burberry scarf is sorta too funny, we need to get you something masculine in Hermes....

    January 1, 2012 | Registered CommenterKaren C.

Oui, Karen, it is INDEED a Burberry scarf. Gee, I don't remember ever studying the Napoleonic Wars. Hermes? By ALL means, get me something from there. I just looked at a sweater...

Hermes sweater with "Chaine d'Ancre" knit pattern in flint grey. 100% cashmere.

Well if I lived in Florida I would be out there campaigning for the man. What an interesting election this will be. Best of luck to the man who stood up for the people with integrity and honesty against that souless snake and her wormy minions!

And happy new year to you Dave - I absolutely Love the new banner

    January 2, 2012 | Registered CommenterMystical Pippin

Well, hello there, Mystical Pippin! How nice it is to see you. Yes, I agree about Jeff, and if I lived in his circuit court district, I would strongly consider voting for him, I but I can't because I don't. I can try to help his cause, though, and we'll see about that, but I am in the middle of writing a post that will be addressing him and his credentials. I want to clear up some misconceptions.

Happy New Year to you! Thank you for the compliment on my new banner. I think it's a keeper - at least until I go to another European city. Hmm... where should I go next?
