OPEN FORUM > Thoughts on Egypt

Just have to vent- Watched the coverage today in utter disbelief. First, Bedouins have camels, wealthy folk have camels (they race 'em in the desert), Regular Egyptian Joes do not own camels. Ditto that quality horseflesh seen in Cairo today- those were prize-winners, top-quality purebred Egyptian Arabs, only for the very wealthy. Everyone else has a burro if they can afford it, and not all that many of them can. That whole "show" of Pro-Mubarak solidarity was complete, thorough BS- nothing more. What a ham-fisted piece of theater that was- I cannot believe Hosni expects anyone to fall for that, but then I haven't been able to believe his damn speeches either. I know we've got Marines there now, helping to move our Nationals outta there. What we also really need to do and pronto is put a nice Marine chopper on that SOB's roof, and force him inside, before he gets his wish to die on Egyptian soil. Not that I care for his tush, but why take all these other lives with you when it's a lost cause... GRRRR. They've been unhappy with him for about 20 years now, time to GO.

We put him in there and invested billions of dollars in him. He may be replaced by a radical muslim extremist. Frankly, I'm not sure which side our bread is buttered on, but it seems that he must go.

Lulu- what really gets me today (2/4) is that if he stepped out right NOW he would save literally hundreds of lives. We could suggest an ad hoc Council of sorts for the interim, and hope the neighbors chime in in agreement- which I bet they would do. They are a pretty secular bunch over there (mainly Sunni), scraping by best they can on a daily basis- their economy is pretty dependent on Tourism, and their Middle Class (such as it is) is not keen to do anything to upset that.

I think the fear of Fundamentalist Islam taking over there is a Boogieman, frankly. That's the argument Mubarak will continue to use of course (not to mention Tel Aviv, which was quite happy with the status quo), and of course it was quite useful to us to have a friendly nation that knew how to torture the people we sent them, but there is def. a new reality a-comin'.... the sooner we are seen to support Mr. Regular Ahmed Egyptian-Guy the better for us, I do believe.
